Oh, you are off on a wonderful adventure in stegosaurus land! These incredible creatures roamed the Earth millions of years ago, during the late Jurassic period. They prowled the Earth when dinosaurs held sway. Stegosauruses were herbivores, or plant-eaters; they dined solely on salad (or whatever you would call ferns and other leafy greens). Stegosaurus - The name "stegosaurs" means is a fun but auto-explanatory roofed lizard.
Stegosauruses were giant dinosaurs with long, bony armor; they had big plates and spiky tails on their backs. You may find yourself asking, why did they need all of that armor. This shows that they likely needed this fur to protect themselves from other animals who wanted to eat them(predators). Those predators were generally other smaller, quicker dinosaurs hunting for a meal. The plates on their backs could also have aided in dissipating heat from their warm climate and larger bodies.
One of the things that set stegosauruses apart is their unique plates (and spines) These were in fact implanted into their skin and served for various purposes. Possible uses for the plates include attracting mates during mating season, or even showing off to other dinosaurs. They also could very well have been used in battles against other stegosauruses or different dinosaurs. The spikes were pretty crucial because it protected the stegosaurus from predators who attempt to come towards them.
This is a wonderful thing that stegosauruses were using to protect themselves from all the dangers. Their plates and spikes acted almost as armor or weapons, which would have made them a formidable opponent for any dinosaur who tried to mess with them. Then, to make things even more interesting for me was what I saw them do... with one other trick up their sleeve. Stegosauruses could raise their plates high when they were scared or threatened, to appear larger and more terrifying. This way, anyone or anything that thought about getting too close could easily be driven away with a scare.
